
Influence of Glycerogelatin on the Antibacterial Activity of Limosilactobacillus reuteri CF48-3A Against Escherichia coli.

AbstractEscherichia coli is one of the most frequently encountered bacteria in aerobic vaginitis. This study evaluated the influence of glycerogelatin base on the antibacterial activity of Limosilactobacillus reuteri CF48-3A against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. Both strains were characterized using phenotypic and biochemical methods. Antibacterial activities were assessed using the agar overlay method, while co-cultivation assessed comparative E. coli growth inhibitory patterns in combination with L. reuteri CF48-3A and glycerogelatin base. Statistical significance was determined using two-factor ANOVA. Characterization confirmed the identity of both organisms. The agar overlay method demonstrated only bacteriostatic activity (IZD = 30.5 ± 0.44). Co-cultivation reduced E. coli growth to 0.38 log₁₀ CFU/mL/h (21.4%) in the presence of L. reuteri CF48-3A compared with control, indicating antagonism. An addition of glycerogelatin to the system further reduced to 0.18 log₁₀ CFU/mL/h (56.1%). This reduction was enhanced with the presence of glycerogelatin base. Glycerogelatin produced a highly significant antibacterial activity (Two way ANOVA), with Turkey’s post hoc analysis showing significant differences (P < 0.05) compared to other groups. L. reuteri CF48-3A is a promising probiotic candidate for inhibiting E. coli ATCC 25922, while, glycerogelatin base is an effective base for optimizing its antibacterial activity.
